computer efficiency: A computer’s ability to utilize resources and perform tasks within a timely manner.

computer network: A group of connected computers that communicate to each through shared resources.

computer performance: A computer’s speed and efficiency in accomplishing requested tasks.

central processing unit (CPU): A division of the computer that is responsible for processing data. It is often referred to as the brain of the computer.

contiguous: A type of file that is not fragmented, but has been saved on the hard drive in one piece.

crashing: An involuntary action that causes a computer system to cease working properly. It is often caused by fragmented files.

defragmentation: The process of organizing files and free space on a hard drive to minimize fragmented files.

defrag program: A type of software that effectively places file segments near each other on the hard drive to treat fragmentation.
